Lost Pet Tracker is an iPhone app that lets you help lost dogs and cats in your city reunite with their owners.
Here's how it works:

Whenever you see an animal that looks like it might be lost, you open Lost Pet Tracker on your iPhone, take a picture of the animal, enter a couple details about it, and hit send. Owners of missing pets in your city will immediately receive an email notification on their iPhones. When they open their email inboxes, they will see the photo you just took, and one of them will recognize their missing pet. They can then follow a map showing the exact GPS location where you spotted the animal.

The app is free, so that even animal lovers who don't own pets themselves can be a part of this and report sightings of lost-looking animals. Registering your pet costs only $5.

For illustration's sake, here's an example:

Let's say you're walking home from the gym, and you see a brown dog that looks lost. You open Lost Pet Tracker, hit the button that says 'I have spotted an animal that might be lost', snap a photo, select 'dog' from the species menu and 'brown' from the color menu, and hit Finish. About 30 seconds later, owners of missing brown dogs in your city will see the photo you just took in their email inbox, with a big google map display of where the animal was when you just saw it 30 seconds ago.
